- What Drivers Licence will I need?
Most Hire Companies require the driver(s) to be over 21 years of age although there are variations. License age requirements are listed under the price lists.
You must present a current New Zealand, International or acceptable overseas Licence at the time of Hire.
- What road rules apply in NZ?
At present in New Zealand we drive on the left side on the road and give way to the right. However, giving way to the right is one of the road rules that is currently under review and may well have changed at your commencement of hire. Check with the Hire Company before hitting the road.
- What are the speed limits?
Distance is measured in Kilometres and Speed in Kilometers Per Hour (kph). Urban areas are 50kph (30mph) and Highways are 100kph (60mph). Driving at over 50kph over the speed limit results in an immediate and automatic 28 day driving suspension and a court case later. You have been warned!
- Will I need vehicle insurance?
Every Hire Company insists on at the least third Party and Public Liability Insurance, some fully comprehensive, however, New Zealander’s do not legally require any Insurance and therefore every company insists on a Bond which is fully refundable if the vehicle is returned in a clean undamaged position. It is strongly recommended that Bond Waiver Insurance is taken out. These options are made available to you when making a reservation.
- How much does petrol (gasoline) cost in NZ?
Averages between NZ$1.52 - NZ$1.54 per litre throughout New Zealand.
- How much does diesel cost in NZ?
Averages between NZ$0.92 - NZ$0.96 per litre throughout New Zealand.
- What travel documents will I need?
All visitors require a passport that is valid for at least 3 months after their intended departure. A visa is not required for most visitors travelling to New Zealand for a stay of less than 3 months. You should check with your local New Zealand embassy or consulate for the latest information.
- What sort of climate does NZ have?
New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons are the opposite to those in the northern hemisphere. Summer is December to February whilst winter is June to August. Average summer temperature is 22 degrees Celcius (72 degrees Farenheit) and winter 9 degress Celcius (48 degress Farenheit).
- What sort of clothing should I take?
In keeping with New Zealand's relaxed lifestyle, dress is informal on most occasions. A jacket is recommended only for those intending to visit a better restaurant or evening show. A waterproof jacket and umbrella is advisable.
- What currency is used in New Zealand?
New Zealand Dollars (NZ$). Current exchange rate is approximately 1 Euro = NZ$1.98. Please check with your bank for current exchange rates. Travellers cheques and most major international credit cards are accepted.
- What are the standard opening hours?
Many businesses and all banks operate only Monday to Friday. Banking hours are 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and are closed on public holidays. Increasingly, stores in major cities are extending their hours through to Saturday and Sunday. Those stores catering largely to visitors are open every day, often with extended hours. Most petrol stations are open every day.
- Is there a goods and services tax?
All goods and services purchased in new Zealand are subject to 12.5% Goods and Services tax. This is usually included in the price, although some hotels and restaurants may quote prices excluding GST.
- When is the best time to travel?
September to April.
- When is the best time to Ski?
July to September.
- What kind of electricity outlets are used in NZ?
Electricity is supplied throughout New Zealand at 240 volts via a slant pin outlet. Hotels often provide a 110 volt socket for electric shavers only. For all other equipment, an adaptor and a converter are necessary.
- What medical and emergency facilities are there?
Medical and emergency services are available but not free to visitors. Please arrange for insurance coverage before your departure. Comprehensive travel insurance is recommended.
- What about tipping?
New Zealanders do not depend on tips for their income and tips are not expected for normal service, however you may wish to show your appreciation for extra special attention.
- Is there a Departure Tax?
A departure tax of NZ$25 is payable by anyone (over the age of 12) departing via the three international airports. This fee can be paid by credit card.
