After closing for five months to let the critters get on with breeding, the Bluff oyster season reopens in April. The arrival in town of the first boat-loads has always been celebrated one way or another, and what started out as just a clutch of cake and craft stalls accompanying all that shucking and slurping has become a red-letter day on the calendar of all New Zealand gourmands. Highlights include a shucking competition, as well, of course, as lots of oysters in the menu. The culinary catchment has widened to include finfish as well – the South Island’s legendary blue cod, and greenshell mussels, salmon, paua and scallops, too. Wine features, and so does beer. For two days a year, you’d almost believe there’s life in Bluff.
